Advising
Letters of recommendation
First, if you are my advisee, it is my responsibility to write a letter for you. If you are my former student, please explain when you took my course, how you performed, and why you think I should write a letter for you. If I previously told you that I can write a letter, just tell me which course you took and in which semester.
Second, please provide all relevant and accurate information at least 2–3 weeks before the deadline.
Third, please explain what you would like me to emphasize in the letter that is not already reflected in your other materials. I will use this as context when writing the letter. An ideal format is a short one-page memo with bullet points. Do not spend too much time on it.
